Transfer Curve Physics
Tape oxide reaches magnetic saturation non-linearly. The B-H curve creates even-order harmonics (2nd, 4th) — perceived as warmth. Hard clipping creates odd-order harmonics — perceived as harshness.
2nd vs 3rd Harmonic
■ 2nd harmonic = octave above = even, musical, warm
■ 3rd harmonic = fifth above octave = odd, tense, edgy
IPS affects high-frequency saturation onset.

Physical Causes
Wow — capstan bearing eccentricity, pinch-roller diameter variation, AC motor synchronization drift. Characterized below 6 Hz.
Flutter — tape-guide resonance, mechanical vibration, capstan surface irregularities. Characterized above 6 Hz.
Compare Speeds
Head Bump & HF Roll-Off
At lower IPS, the reproduce head becomes electrically longer relative to the recorded wavelength. This creates a characteristic "head bump" — a low-frequency boost — and accelerates HF roll-off above a cutoff that scales with tape velocity.

William Basinski — Disintegration Loops (2002)
In 2001, composer William Basinski attempted to digitize decaying reel-to-reel tape loops from the 1980s. As the oxide shed from the aging polyester base, the music literally disintegrated on playback — each pass removing more magnetic information. He recorded the process over hours.
On September 11, 2001, he watched the World Trade Center towers fall from his Brooklyn rooftop while the final loop played out. The recordings became an accidental elegy. The disintegration was not reversible. The decay was the composition.
Listen: With vs. Without Phono Stage
RIAA Time Constants
The RIAA standard defines three time constants: 3180µs (50Hz), 318µs (500Hz), and 75µs (2122Hz). Together they create a shelving response — boosting bass by +20dB and cutting treble by −20dB during cutting. The phono stage applies the exact inverse. Without it, bass disappears and highs screech.
Groove Physics
A 20Hz bass note cut at full level would require a groove excursion wide enough to consume space for 30 seconds of music. RIAA compression brings all frequencies to roughly equal groove width, maximizing playing time and preventing the stylus jumping grooves.
Restoration Limit Slider
Surface noise, clicks, and crackle respond well. Warp wow and inner groove distortion are geometric — they cannot be undone without the original master.
Physical Archaeology
Every noise type is a fossil record of the vinyl's history. Surface noise tells of humidity and dust. Clicks mark debris impacts. Crackle reveals micro-fractures in the pressing. Warp wow records temperature stress. Inner groove distortion is the mathematical consequence of geometry — the stylus must reproduce the same lateral velocity as the cutting head, but at a smaller radius.
Cumulative State
The Accumulation Problem
Professional orchestral recordings in the 1960s–70s often involved 3–4 tape generations: session → edit master → mixing → lacquer cut. Each generation added noise and coloration. Engineers balanced this against digital's lack of "air." Three stages of modest saturation sound better than one stage of heavy saturation — the harmonics stay musical.
